Common Medical Problems Of Golden Retrievers

by Chris Scarborough

Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular dogs, and they also make great pets. But they can also have health problems. Below are some health problems that can affect Golden Retrievers.

Seizures.

This can have different causes, like viral infections, and genetic or environmental factors. Even though an occasional seizure isn't always a problem, dogs that have recurring seizures should receive medical attention and should not be bred. Vets can recommend medicines that control recurring seizures, although medicine isn't always effective 100% of the time. Generally, however, a dog can live a long and happy life despite having epilepsy.

Skin allergies

Skin allergies are quite common among Golden Retrievers. Skin problems may have many causes but are often the result of allergens such as flea bites, dust, airborne pollen, food, and even mould.

Symptoms include biting, scratching, licking, and discomfort. You should treat the itching, since irritated skin can become infected.

Giving your pet the right diet can prevent health problems. Of course, you also need to make sure that your dog is protected against fleas. If you consult with your vet, you can more than likely eliminate the risks your pet has of suffering the effects of a skin allergy.

Under-active thyroid

This condition involves a malfunctioning thyroid gland. Golden Retrievers that have hypothyroidism can have common symptoms like hair loss or obesity. They can also be less energetic. This condition is not always easy to diagnose, but it can be detected by a blood test which your vet will perform.

The treatment of hypothyroidism involves taking an oral medication on a daily basis. Oral treatment is usually very effective. However, the medication must be continued for the rest of the dog's life.

Though medical conditions are a bit more common with Golden Retrievers, keeping them healthy can still prevent these. You don't have to worry about much if you just keep your Golden Retriever strong and healthy. Generally, Golden Retrievers are quite healthy, even if they do get sick at times. You can ensure that your dog will heal quickly if you take him to the vet right away when he shows signs of poor health.
