Tips On Effectively Leash Training Puppies

by Sandy Rutherforde

There are some good methods to train dogs and a few not so good ways to train dogs. Finding out about leash training puppies is the start of an effective path of training. My best friend and my uncle were both dog trainers and they each were successful in their efforts, but each had a substantially different way of training their dogs.

My uncle was a trainer in the army. He was taught the way to train dogs with a stiff resolve and ways to make them working dogs having a knack for obedience and discipline. Those dogs were taught with very simple techniques and the dogs that stuck out as fighters were then pulled into service for extra work as military or police dogs. It wasn't difficult to know which dogs were the fighters and which ones were the caretakers.

It doesn't take a police or military dog trainer to figure out dogs and it doesn't take a dog professional to figure out whether a dog is a working dog, a hunting dog or a docile family dog. There aren't many individuals who can fully understand the disposition of a dog unless they have grown up with dogs and understand the best way to judge them. My best friend who grew up to train dogs taught me this and I've brought it with me right up until this day.

Leash training puppies stands out as the first step in teaching a dog how to conduct themselves. You need to find a collar that will fit around the dog's neck but not choke it. If your dog does not respond to their collar, then you need to give consideration to a choke collar or collar that constricts when pulled by the leash. That'll be sure to attract the dog's attention.

Choking a dog is not the way to train it. Having the dog walk beside you and teaching it to respond properly by keeping pace with you is the first step of training. Teaching the dog how to stop and sit next to you whenever you command it to do so is an important area of training and obedience. Your dog has to be ready to adhere to these fundamental commands to be able to start its training.

When your dog is able to walk next to you and sit on your command, then you may be prepared for the next course of training which would include something similar to sitting your dog down and undoing the leash and walking away while being sure your dog remains seated. Then, giving a command should bring your dog to you. These are the next stages of leash training puppies.
